He just shrugged. "Personally, it makes no difference if you come from a family of assassins, or whatever. Can't judge a book by her cover, y'know?" He gave her a little wink.

Her laughed flowed out. "Nova, my family is not normal assassins. Per'aps you 'ave heard of us..."

"Can't say that I have. Though it looks like you're kinda tight-lipped about it, so I wouldn't be surprised."

She laughed again. "Usually I am, but I will make an exception for you. The name of my family is Laroche."

Nova cocked an eyebrow. "Ah, the Laroche family, the legendary French royal assassins. That's a big name to live up to, Madame. Even bigger than my own."

"Oui. But my family is... non important. They do things in way that I do not want to do. So I am 'ere and they are there."

Nova nodded. "Now I see why you don't want to be known by your family name." He then chuckled. "Funny. I'm not too different. Don't want people giving me special treatment because of my family name."

"Some special treatment I do not mind." She smiled, thinking of the check. "Tell me, Nova, your name. I told you mine."

He thought for a moment. It has been so long since his name-his real name-had been voiced.

"Emile Baudoin."

Aurélie's smile was slow and wide and very wicked. "My grand-père would be furious if he knew I was talking to you. 'E still speaks ill of your family for catching La Maladie before 'is arrière-grand-père could."

She laughed, licking his lips fondly before drawing back. Her heart had been stirred by that, which wasn't good. She looked for a carefree ride and if he wasn't going to be one, she would be practical.

She retrieved the check, smiling. "So let's get this taken care of."

Nova nodded, a smile on his features as well. "Agreed."

"Good. Cash or deposit? I do not know the area well enough to know where to go for either."

"Deposit. Take the full twelve, I don't mind. Besides..." He pulled Cross's check from his pocket. "Cross does owe me one."

She laughed. "Most generous."

"You did me a great honor, Miss Aurélie, letting me work with you. It's the least I can do. Just don't think for a second that it's because you're a Laroche.

"Anyway, the nearest federal credit union is on the other side of the park. It's still not far, but it's a further walk than the others. So..." he offered his hand to the girl. "Shall we, madmoiselle?" he said with his impressive French accent.
