Kale nodded. "I can see why. Quite a nice rifle. What's it made of"

"Sorry," Cross said, shaking his head. "This weapon is one-of-a-kind, and I intend for it to stay that way. I even self-fund all my R&D..." That's when he realized something was off. He started patting himself down rapidly, until... "Dammit! I left my check back in the park!... Aw, man!" He placed a hand to his head in frustration. "I was supposed to meet Nova back there!"

"...He bailed on me."

A brown-furred wolf stood under the shade of a tree in the park. In his hand was a half-crumpled slip of paper, a check made out to "Cross the Echidna."

With a frustrated sigh, he stuffed the check in his pocket. "You owe me one, Cross," he muttered.

A white, fluffy, harmless looking cocker spaniel dropped down, eying the wolf. "Salut. You looking for that echidna 'oo was 'ere?"

"Hm?" He turned to the cocker spanial, with mild surprise. "Um... yeah."

She smiled. "If you want to play a game, I'll tell you where 'e is."

His eyes narrowed, wary of the "harmless-looking" girl. "What'd ya have in mind?"

Smiling, she whisked back up the tree.

She's fast!... He took a defensive stance, preparing for this girl's "game."

"Come on and find me!"

He growled. "A game of hide-and-seek. Great..." He cautiosly walked into the small grove.

A knife landed at his feet and she laughed.

He now felt a little unsettled. Damn. She's probably an assassin, or somethin'. Shaking himself from his stupor, he looked to the branches above. "Is that supposed to scare me!?"

"Not really." She landed on his back. "Just looking for a reaction, and you definitely gave me one." She smiled and licked his cheek. "'E went off after a fox 'oo showed up in a limo."

Normally, that would've made his skin crawl. But this girl was different, somehow. Instead, he felt hot at the cheeks. "And what's your relation with either of 'em? Or you just like sneakin' around?"

"Ah... Oui." She smiled. "You are very tall. Do you want to know which way they went?"

"I'll take a rain check. It ain't like we had stuff to do." He had to force down his blush with all his nerve. That French accent was so alluring...

"Then you'll carry me somewhere, non?"

The wolf took a deep breath, getting his nerves together. "Only if you tell me your name."

"Aurélie," she cooed, pressing against him more firmly. She knew her effect on men and generally liked to exploit it. "And yours, si'l vous plaît?"

He could feel his heart skip a beat... or two. Concentrate! She could slit your throat at any time, for all you know!

"Th' name's Nova," he said firmly, hooking his arms around her legs. He had to adjust his grip once or twice, in fear of getting "too close." "So, where'd ya have in mind?"

"This little place nearby. Per'aps you 'ave 'eard of it... Le Chasse aux sorcières. The Witch 'Unt."



[aka very seedy bar mid-city. Not a place anyone would go by choice]

Nova cocked an eyebrow, and couldn't help but look at her. "Say Wha? I know alot of dodgy dives, but why that place?" It just registered to him that she was actually kinda... Concentrate!

"I am looking for someone, and I 'ave intel that that is where I will find 'im. I know where it is, though I do not think a 'andsome, strong wolf would ever let a young fille go to such a place all by 'erself." Her lips curved and her innocent face became just a bit wicked. "Would you, Nova?"

Nova could feel his skin crawl. Yup. Definite creepy cute. "A deal's a deal," he said with a huff, and began to make his way for possibly the worst dive in the city.
